The wild boar is the ancestral form of the domestic pig. It is predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day wild boars lay in dens coverd with branches, leaves and grass, so-called "cauldrons", in the thicket. They love mud baths and are usually covered by a thick layer of mud, which protects them from insects and has a cooling effect on hot days. Wild boars are extremely short-sighted, but have a much better hearing and an excellent sense of smell.
